4-H Is Military Friendly Back »

The heart and hands of 4-H have always included service to the military; over the years clubs have planted victory gardens, knit socks, packed care packages and sent thousands of Christmas cards to support and encourage those protecting our country. In recent years, 4-H has turned to the families of those brave soldiers, looking for ways to be of support in the communities where they live. Today’s military families are dispersed across the entire state of South Dakota. There are military families in every county, representing every branch of military service. A small percentage of these families are involved in 4-H community clubs.

4-H Clubs are micro-communities with several caring adults, involved parents, and members with a variety of ages and interests. Together the group works to accomplish its goals for the year, and to reach out to their community. These priorities fit well with those of military families, who are also focused on family unity, serving one’s country and accomplishing a group goal. Because the 4-H program doesn’t stop at any certain age, the relationships develop over a long time period, and can evolve into a type of extended family. During times of stress or challenge, such as during a loved one’s deployment or when a family member is sick, the 4-H members and their families provide each other with support and assistance. Though a club may never replace actual family, it can certainly add a different type of support that is both necessary and welcome.

Military families can find a 4-H connection in their community by contacting a local club, county extension office, or requesting information from their service branch’s Family Service Coordinator.
