4-H has been building an exciting new focus in the area of Science. While many of the traditional 4-H projects are based on science, a science ready volunteer is necessary to help youth to embrace and challenge themselves to take a more scientific approach to their project learning. Many 4-H volunteers have a long standing relationship with 4-H and the community club approach. Their experience in youth development practices and organizational skills are still critical to overall success. Their approach to project work may need a fresh perspective to help youth jump to the next level of success.
Volunteers in the 4-H program heartily approve of adding more science to the program, however many are a little nervous about how they might accomplish it. The National 4-H Science Academy has suggested an acronym that helps leaders to become science ready; APPROVE.
Step 1-Leaders Assess their current comfort level in the area of science. A simple tool is available.
Step 2-Leaders identify their own niche or Place in 4-H science programming.
Step 3-Leaders Partner with a local expert in the area they’ve selected as their niche.
Step 4-Leaders consider their past Role and how it may change by adding science.
Step 5-Leaders work with their partner and/or 4-H advisors to identify Outcomes of the program.
Step 6-Leaders work at Volunteer delegation within their club, so they have more flexibility.
Step 7- Leaders enjoy the benefits of Expansion of the volunteer base in their community!
These steps can provide opportunity for 4-H clubs and community programs to enhance quality, build a stronger science focused program, attract new volunteers, and keep 4-H moving forward in the 21st century.
