Livestockology at the Black Hills Stock Show Back »

Attention youth! Are you brilliant in beef, proficient in pig, or skilled in sheep, test your knowledge in the livestockology competition at the Black Hills Stock Show Youth Day February 4, 2012 in Rapid City, SD. This event will be held at the Central States Fairgrounds.  Livestockology is a way to exhibit knowledge and understanding of livestock (beef, sheep, and swine) sciences and husbandry in a friendly but competitive setting.

Area 4-H and FFA members can compete in teams of 3 to 4 members.  There is no limit to the number of teams that counties may enter.  Teams competing will have two age groups (age as of January 1, 2012) juniors 13 and under and seniors 14 and over.  Youth must be at least 8 years of age and not have turned 19 by January 1, 2012.  Juniors may compete as a senior but seniors may not be on a junior team.  If a county cannot field a team they may combine with their neighboring county to make-up a team.

The contest will consist of four phases: a written exam, station identification, livestock judging, and team problem solving.  Individually, team members will complete a written exam of multiple choice, true/false, or fill in the blank questions.  Also individually, team members will compete in station identification and livestock judging, examples of stations which may be used include: anatomy of beef, sheep and swine, ID of grains and forages, or equipment.  Contestants must also place a beef, sheep, and swine class, to score in this phase of the contest youth must participate in the livestock judging contest held also on Saturday, February 4, 2012 prior to the livestockology contest.  In the team problem challenge all teams will be presented with the same two livestock industry problems.  Contestants will have time to form an oral solution/answer to one the problems and the other question will be a written response.  Teams will be judged on understanding of subject matter and completeness of their responses.
