Both SDSU Extension entomologists were present at Dakotafest displaying a booth that contained an array of pinned and live insect specimens, with a focus on understanding the pest and beneficial insects in South Dakota.

Discussion Topics

Home & Garden Pests: Many insect related questions regarding home insect pests were addressed by Amanda Bachmann (SDSU Extension Pesticide Education & Urban Entomology Field Specialist), especially those concerning root weevils, earwigs, cicadas, and cicada killer wasps.

Agricultural Pests: In addition, Adam Varenhorst (Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist) addressed questions regarding insect pests in agricultural crops. These were fairly concentrated on alfalfa weevils, soybean aphids, and the large grasshopper populations that are being observed in certain areas of South Dakota.

Publications & Handouts

The booth had numerous handouts including the new Common Pollinators in South Dakota identification guide, 2016 pest management guides, as well as soybean insect information sheets. Questions came from both adults and children, and reinforced the idea that entomology is an area of interest to all ages. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
