Volga Research Farm Summer Tour

The annual Volga Farm Tour will be held on July 26, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. (CST) and will run till dusk. There will be continuous tours running throughout the afternoon, with each lasting about an hour. Between tours, stop by and talk with Connie Tande (SDSU Extension Diagnostician) about plant sample issues, and identification of pests or field problems.
The farm is located 1.5 miles South of Volga on Brookings County Road 5 on the East side of road.
The day will include a meal provided by our sponsors. This year the tour is being sponsored by the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association, South Dakota Wheat Commission and South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council.
- Weed Management
Paul O. Johnson (SDSU Extension Weed Management Coordinator) will talk about how pre-emergent herbicides worked this year and weed management strategies in the glyphosate-resistant period like dicamba, Enlist, and Balance beans.
- Crops and Soils
Anthony Bly (SDSU Extension Soils Field Specialist) will cover soil fertility issues. David Karki and Sara Berg (SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialists) will discuss agronomy and cover crops.
- Insect Management
Adam Varenhorst (SDSU Extension Field Crop Entomologist), Brady Hauswedell and Cole Dierks (SDSU graduate students) will talk about soybean aphids and host plant resistance, seed treatments in soybeans and corn along with the latest updates of what is happening in the field this year and what to be on the lookout for.
