2017 Impact: Community Vitality Back »

The SDSU Extension Community Vitality program focuses on building the capacity of local leaders with the intent that those local leaders will, in turn, improve their communities using strategic and sustainable skills. Critical program foci include helping communities develop new social networks, increasing local decision making and strengthening the diversity of citizen involvement in community expansion and growth activities. Over the last several years, communities have requested networking assistance with planning for small entrepreneurial endeavors, marketing and workforce development. 

Small businesses employ 60% of South Dakota's private workforce. 167 entrepreneurs participated in 11 training and networking opportunities to grow South Dakota's communities and small businesses.

7 Communities, Unlimited Opportunities: Marketing Hometown America has changed the conversation in 7 South Dakota communities including: Deadwood/Lead, Highmore, Mt. Vernon, Wessington Springs, Wall, Faith and Hot Springs.

1 Drive-In Theater: In Wall, SD a high school student trained as a Marketing Hometown America community facilitator let the effort to open a drive-in movie theater.
