The South Dakota Sheep Growers will host their 79th Annual Convention in Rapid City Sept 30 – Oct. 1 at the Best Western Ramkota.

Friday, September 30th  - Tour Schedule

9:30 am Board Busses - Best Western Ramkota, Rapid City

10:00 am Ellsworth Air Force Base Air and Space Museum, also meet with Base Commanders regarding cooperation with area ranchers when conducting exercises in the Powder River Training Complex

11:30 am SD Game, Fish and Parks Outdoor Campus – Split into 2 groups for 45 minute tours

  • Group 1 – tour of facility and presentations by SD GFP Staff  
  • Group 2 – Adding value to lamb products by Gwen Kitzan, Lamb fabrication demonstration by Mr. Ron Gapp, Sturgis Meat Service

12:15 – 1:15 pm Lunch/Picnic at SD GFP Campus – New Generation Feeds and CHS

1:15 – 2:00 pm Switch tour groups

2:00 pm Breakout Programs at SD Game, Fish and Parks Outdoor campus.   

(30 minutes each, Select 3 of the 4 to attend)

  1. Sheep handling techniques and Sheep Safety and Quality Assurance (SSQA) – Heidi Carroll –Livestock Stewardship Extension Associate, SDSU Extension
  2. Lamb Time preparation and Lamb Post Mortem analysis – Dr. Larry Goelz, Pipestone Vet Clinic 
  3. Training and Management of Livestock Guard Dogs – Marvin Dunkster 
  4. Sheep Dog demonstration – Jamie Spring 

3:30 pm Return to Best Western Ramkota

4:45 pm Board bus to travel to KOL Restaurant.

5 – 6:30 pm Sheep Growers Sponsored Social with Chef’s challenge –KOL Restaurant – downtown RC 

7 pm Bus returns to Best Western Ramkota.

5 – 7 pm Pizza Party Pool Side for kids and families at the Best Western Ramkota

    2015 “Trapper of the Year” and Shepherd Award” will be announced in addition to the MIWW state level winners.
