Beating the Holiday Blues Back »

Many individuals look forward to the activities of the holiday season -- decorations, parties, family traditions, food and family time.  When the hustle and bustle is over, some persons may be left feeling blue.

Senior adults are no exception.  You may be fatigued from traveling or hosting family gatherings.  Post holiday chores as putting away the decorations can be a large task when you are already tired.  You may suffer from the feeling that things did not go as well as expected.

If you find yourself feeling blue after this holiday season, try one of these tips to help bounce back.

  • Keep a daily schedule.  Set particular times for meals.  Complete physical activity at the same time each day.
  • Enjoy activities that are free in the community.  Attend musical programs at the local school.  Enjoy board or card games at the senior center.  Join a quilting or woodworking group at the church.
  • Spend time with supportive and caring people.  Reach out and make new friends.  Email or call someone you have not heard from for awhile.
  • Share a smile or laughter with others.  The best laughter arises unexpectedly from our life experiences.  But sometimes we have to help it along.  Find something funny to watch or listen to.
  • Consider a getaway, if your health and finances will allow.  A trip to a warmer climate may do a world of good.  If not, plan a special outing in your local area.
  • Do something for someone else.  Consider volunteering in your community.  Serve as an adopted grandparent at the local school or day care.  Help out at the food pantry.  Help your neighbor by doing an errand for them or clearing their driveway.

Take time for yourself.  Spend time working on projects that you enjoy, as crafts or coin collecting.  It’s never too late to start a new hobby.
