The kids are getting a two week break from school and you may be spending some time at home with them, even if it is only a few days. If you’re like me you look forward to a little extra quality time with your family. But, I know that I have to have some constructive activities planned for my children so WWIII doesn’t break out because they’re bored.
Here are a few activities that you and your kids will enjoy that do not include just plopping down in front of the television.
- Bake together. This can be fun with children of all ages. Older youth can read the recipe while younger kids can dump pre-measured ingredients into the mixing bowl. Frost cookies and let your little ones decorate them with sprinkles and other candies.
- Play games. Playing games with your kids is a great way to spend time together. If you don’t have any for your younger children, make a matching game together. Cut heavier paper into equal sizes and draw pictures to match up.
- Put on a show. One of my kids’ favorite things to do is sing and dance. Turn the TV off and turn the music up. Let them dress up in some of their play clothes, dresses, or maybe even some of your clothes. Let them express themselves.
- Find a new home for all their gifts. Let your kids help clean up the holiday mess by deciding where to put their new toys/clothes. Give them the responsibility of keeping their room and/or toy room clean during the holiday break.
- Be creative. Make art together. Let your kids express themselves through finger painting, or if you’re like me and don’t allow messy paint in the house, use crayons or washable markers. You can have them draw their favorite part of the season, or just whatever they want to draw.
