Teaching Youth About Winter Safety Back »

Have you ever had an argument with your youth about them refusing to wear their hat and gloves?  They argue that they won’t be outside long or they feel that it’s just a hassle to have to lug around extra clothing when they are indoors.
Your adolescent may not realize that even the shortest walks or drives can turn into a dangerous situation when it’s cold outside.  It is important to explain the importance of taking proper precautions during winter months.  Discussing winter safety with your youth can help him or her understand that being prepared is important to keep them safe.

When cold temperatures and wind combine the situation can turn dangerous.  When outdoors in cold weather it is important to dress warm (including the hats and gloves your teenager complains about).  Although this may seem like common sense, it is important to discuss why dressing warmly is important.  Explain to your youth that frostbite can occur in a short amount of time when cold temperatures mix with wind.  In extremely cold conditions, frostbite can occur in as little as five minutes when skin is exposed. Warm clothing is also important in case they do get stranded while traveling.

Teenagers may not use discretion when it comes to traveling during a winter storm.  It is important to maintain open lines of communication with your teen.  During bad weather, stress to your youth that you need to know their travel plans.  If available, have them call you when they arrive at their destination and when they are going to leave to come home.  This will help you gauge how long their trip should take them.  This is especially important in rural areas because during a storm, the roads in rural areas may become icy and drifts form quickly.  Keep a winter safety kit in the car and discuss what to do if your child becomes stranded.  More information on winter safety preparedness to discuss with your youth can be found at Ready.gov.
