What is ‘Fit’? Back »

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘fit’?   To some individuals, it relates to physical activity.  To some it may mean being trim and fit.  While others may think of it as being free of disease and other health problems.  The true definition of fit is far broader and more personal.  It refers to one’s optimal health and overall well-being.

Being fit translates to every aspect of one’s health – not only your physical health.  It includes your emotional and mental well-being, too.   In fact, all three of these aspects are interconnected.  Nutrition and physical activity are fundamental to each one.

When you’re fit, you have:

  • stamina and a positive outlook to handle the mental challenges of everyday life and the emotional ups and downs
  • reduced risk for health problems, including serious disease as heart disease, cancer and diabetes
  • the chance to look and feel your best
  • physical strength and endurance to protect yourself in the case of an emergency
  • a better quality of life – and perhaps a longer one.

Good nutrition and regular physical activity are two lifestyle habits that promote being fit; however, they aren’t the only ones.  Other lifestyle decisions may positively affect your health.  These decisions include getting adequate sleep, not smoking, managing stress, drinking alcoholic beverages in moderation, wearing a seat belt, getting regular medical check-ups, and spiritual connectedness.

One’s approach to being ‘fit’ is multi-faceted.  You can choose one or several habits to do the task.  The more you use, the better you are at mastering the concept.
